Obstetrical Services
Madison Community Hospital's obstetrical unit provides one-to-one labor/delivery support. Our large birthing suite features a birthing bed (complete with labor bar and adjusts to positions to provide the best support for mother), a Jacuzzi, and "labor ball." The room and staff strive to make it a "home-like" delivery. Intrathecal analgesia is available to help provide comfort during the difficult stages of labor as well as one-on-one coaching and breathing techniques. We are very proud to have 100% of our registered nurses certified in Neonatal Resuscitation, which is accredited by the American Heart Association and the Academy of Pediatrics. Five of our staff is certified to teach this class.
Following your delivery, education is provided for you and your new family. You may choose "hands on" education and/or view videos on infant care and safety as well as breastfeeding techniques. Madison Community Hospital OB Unit endorses Dr. Harvey Karp, "The Happiest Baby on the Block" techniques for calming the crying infant and promote better sleep in the newborns. We provide educational materials for home reference as well from the Academy of Pediatrics.
We are very proud to have 93.7% of our mothers choose to breastfeed. We support this effort and try to give education and encouragement for those mothers. We also provide hearing screens to all babies born at the Madison Community Hospital. We test newborns for 23-panel screen for metabolic disorders. South Dakota has a higher rate of metabolic disorders than other parts of the United States. We have been performing this screen for a number of years and will continue to offer it.
After discharge, we provide your choice of home visit from an R.N. or return visit to the hospital. It is a personal time for you and your infant with the nurse to examine both and provide assistance with questions you may have since returning home.
Prenatal classes and breastfeeding classes and tours of the beautiful obstetrical unit are available. Please contact the hospital for more information.
